I pledge allegiance ...You promise to be true
to the flag ...to the emblem of your country
of the United States of America ...a nation made up of fifty states and several territories each with certain rights of its own
and to the Republic ...a country where the people elect representatives from among themselves to make laws for them
for which it stands, ...the flag represents the United States of America
one Nation under God, ...a country where people are free to believe in God
indivisible, ...the nation cannot be split into parts
with liberty and justice ...with freedom and fairness
for all. ...for every person in the country -- you and every other American.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written by Reverend Francis Bellamy for the dedication of the World's Fair grounds in Chicago on October 21, 1892. The wording was slightly altered before it was officially designated as the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag by Congress in 1945. The words "under God" were added in 1954. The Pledge of Allegiance should be recited standing, facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Uniformed scouts should render a salute with their right hand.

A Salute to Our Flag

I am more than just cloth and colors that you randomly pieced together into a design.

My red stripes represent the blood of our families spilled in defense of peace, freedom and justice. Our history is colored by our hardiness and valor.

My white stripes shine with the spirit of democracy. White reflects the purity of our purpose.

My blue field stands for one nation under God. Vigilance and perseverance maintain our faith.

My cluster of stars is a testament to the unity and patriotism of our people.

I am a reminder of the commitment we have for our country, our liberty, and our way of life.

I embody the continuity of our ideals and principles.

I am the symbol of refuge for oppressed people everywhere.

I am the emblem of the greatest democracy on earth.

I have led your families in our battle cry for peace, freedom and justice.

I am an inspiration for which patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

I will be their sentinel for peace, freedom and justice.

I gallantly fly our colors in the face of democracy's enemies.

I stand for what is right.

I honor the spirit of scouting everywhere.

Honor me, respect me, defend me.

Never let my enemies tarnish my image or tear me down, least I never return.

Keep lit the fires of democracy.

Fly me proudly as a guardian of peace, freedom and justice everywhere.

I am what you make me.

I am your flag.
